Castrol has launched a brand-new YouTube channel to provide consumers with clear and simple guidance on essential vehicle maintenance and how best to select the right oil for their car or motorcycle. The channel can be found at: Castrol U.K. – YouTube
The new videos explain the difference between various oil grades and outlines how they have been formulated to protect engines during common driving scenarios, including stop-start traffic, high speeds, and extended mileages between servicing. Consumers can also learn about engine oil additives and the difference between synthetic and conventional oils.
Also featured are useful step-by-step video guides that aim to alleviate the concerns that many people feel about undertaking basic maintenance procedures themselves. Viewers are guided on how to change their vehicle’s engine oil in five simple steps, including draining the oil and replacing the oil and filter. Other topics include how to check the oil level, what to do if the oil pressure is too low, and what to do if too much oil has been inserted.
The creation of Castrol’s new YouTube channel follows recent publication of a nationwide survey into vehicle maintenance trends. It found that just 24% of Italian car owners check their oil once per month*, which lubricants experts at Castrol recommend is necessary to optimise fuel efficiency, minimise carbon emissions and extend the life of the engine.
The survey also found that a minority of Italian car owners (33%) have never topped up the engine oil on their current car or any previous car, and 16% said they wouldn’t know how to perform a check on their current vehicle. Many stated that they are not confident in doing an oil check themselves, with 46% agreeing with the statement: “I would prefer a technician / mechanic to check as they would do a more effective job.” Only 43% said they typically check the oil level themselves, with the remainder instead asking for it to be done by a partner, spouse, neighbour, relative or work colleague.
Castrol estimates that 21% of vehicles on European roads are currently low on oil, and 8% are at immediate risk of damage because the oil level is at or below the minimum recommended level**.
Shailendra Gupte, Marketing Director EMEA, at Castrol said: “The risk of extensive engine damage increases if the wrong oil is used; therefore, it’s vital consumers can access reliable and practical information that easily enables them to identify the oil most suited for their vehicle and usage requirements.”
“When creating our videos and deciding on the topics that would be useful, we researched the most common oil selection and maintenance questions that were being asked on YouTube,” Gupte adds. “These new videos have been designed to be engaging and easy to follow, drawing upon extensive Castrol expertise to help build consumer trust and confidence.”
